MassDEP is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources. For waste and recycling, in addition to overseeing regulation and enforcement, MassDEP administers municipal recycling and composting grants and technical assistance, business recycling assistance through RecyclingWorks in Massachusetts, as well as school recycling and composting assistance through The Green Team.

Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC) is an industry-funded nonprofit founded in 1998. With the supported of 29 manufacturers who branded and sold mercury thermostats in the U.S., we have recovered over 2.1 million thermostats, or 10 tons of mercury.

Covanta is the world and MA leader in producing energy from post-recycled waste streams and specifically looks to manage difficult waste in a fashion that is most beneficial to the environment. Some of these difficult to manage wastes include heavy metals, like mercury, lead or cadmium, for which Covanta provides both outreach and collection programs. Other non-toxic bearing wastes, e.g. mattresses, propane tanks, non-repairable bulkies etc. are handled through other Covanta services.
